Renormalization Group Analysis of Scalar Field

چکیده

We employ Wilson's renormalization group procedure in an attempt to classify and understand the physics of the continuum limits of scalar field theories. Analysis of the flows near the Gaussian fixed point reveals the existence of an infinite set of asymptotically free continuum limits. We study the associated physics by calculating scattering cross sections and the i-loop effective potential. Examination of the latter provides evidence for the existence of a phase boundary in parameter space between those theories with broken symmetry and those with unbroken symmetry. We extend the flow analysis near the Gaussian fixed point to Bose/Fermi theories possessing arbitrary internal symmetries. Fermionic interactions are found to decouple in parameter space. The behavior of renormalization group trajectories near the Gaussian fixed point is solely determined by the Bosonic structure of the theory. Thesis Supervisor: Kerson Huang Title: Professor

Renormalization Group Analysis of the Heavy Field Decoupling in a Scalar Theory

The problem of two coupled scalar fields, one with mass much lighter than the other is analysed by means of Wilson’s renormalization group approach. Coupled equations for the potential and the wave function renormalization are obtained by means of the gradient expansion. The Appelquist-Carazzone theorem is checked at energies comparable with the light mass; the physics of the light field is als...

Effective Scalar Field Theory and Reduction of Couplings

A general discussion of the renormalization of the quantum theory of a scalar field as an effective field theory is presented. The renormalization group equations in a mass independent renormalization scheme allow to identify the possibility to go beyond the renormalizable φ4 theory without losing its predictive power. It is shown that there is a minimal extension with just one additional free ...

Renormalization group for nonrenormalizable theories: Einstein gravity with a scalar field.

We develop a renormalization-group formalism for non-renormalizable theories and apply it to Einstein gravity theory coupled to a scalar field with the Lagrangian L = √ g [RU(φ) − 1 2 G(φ) gμν ∂μφ∂νφ − V (φ)], where U(φ), G(φ) and V (φ) are arbitrary functions of the scalar field. We calculate the one-loop counterterms of this theory and obtain a system of renormalization-group equations in par...

Effective Critical Exponents from Finite Temperature Renormalization Group

Effective critical exponents for the λφ4 scalar field theory are calculated as a function of the renormalization group block size k−1 o and inverse critical temperature βc. Exact renormalization group equations are presented up to first order in the derivative expansion and numerical solutions are obtained with and without polynomial expansion of the blocked potential. For a finite temperature ...
